After making things easier for web developers, Claude has now entered the video editing space in a big way.
I run two Instagram pages myself, and for the last few months I’ve been using Claude to edit most of my reels.
I’m not saying the video gets ready in 20-30 seconds (that was an exaggeration), but a decent vertical reel can be ready in 15-20 minutes once your system is set up properly.
The video you’re watching right now was also edited using Claude.
So you can judge the quality yourself.
In this article, I’ll show you my exact process — the same one I use daily. No fluff, just the real workflow.
Step 1: Prepare Your Raw Footage First (Most Important Step)
Never give Claude completely raw talking-head footage.
First, open Filmora, CapCut, or any free editor and do these two things:
- Make basic cuts — remove long pauses, “umms”, and unnecessary parts.
- Do a light color grade. I just apply my LUTs. For a 5-7 minute video, this takes me around 5-10 minutes.
Export this as your raw file.
Why is this step so important?
If you ask Claude to do the cutting and basic color grading as well:
- It burns a lot of credits
- It takes much longer
- Sometimes the results are messy
That’s why I always do the basic cutting and color grading myself, and leave the creative part (animations, text, B-rolls, style) to Claude.
Step 2: Use Claude Desktop App (Not the Website)
Download the Claude Desktop app. Don’t try to do this work from the browser version.
I recommend taking the Pro plan (currently around ₹2399). The free version works a little, but it’s quite limited and frustrating. Since I value my time, I just pay for Pro.
Once the app is open, go to the Code section (not the normal Chat).
Step 3: Create the Right Folder Structure
Make a new folder. I named mine Sahitya Porwal Edits.
Inside it, create these folders:
- Background Music – put all the music tracks you want to use
- B-rolls – Instagram icons, graphics, gestures, stock clips, etc.
- Images – any extra assets
- Raw – your pre-cut and color-graded talking head video
- References – 2-3 reels whose style you like and want to copy
The References folder is very important. Claude studies those reels and tries to match the editing style.
Step 4: Install the Required Tools
Claude needs these tools to work properly:
- FFmpeg – for cutting, joining, and exporting videos
- Whisper – for generating captions from your voice
- Hyperframes – for better animations and effects
Just tell Claude:
“Install Whisper, Hyperframes and FFmpeg from the internet”
These tools are necessary. Without them, the editing quality drops a lot.
Step 5: Set the System Prompt (This Is the Real Game Changer)
This is the most important part.
Give Claude this kind of system prompt (you can change the name and channel):
Act as an elite technical video editor and motion director for Sahitya Porwal.I create vertical videos (9:16) for Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts.I will give you: – Pre-cut talking head footage (basic cuts already done) – Background music – B-rolls and images – Reference reels for styleYour job: – Edit the video in the exact style of the reference reels – Add smooth zooms, text animations, graphic overlays, and transitions – Keep the energy high and modern – Use the tools: FFmpeg, Whisper, Hyperframes – Export the final vertical videoAlways ask for clarification if something is unclear.
Step 6: Give the Actual Editing Prompt
After selecting the folder and installing the tools, give a prompt like this:
“Edit this raw footage.
Use related elements from the folders.
Follow the style of the reference reels I provided.
Make it for Instagram Reels (9:16).
Add captions, zooms, text animations and B-rolls where needed.
Export the final video.”
Claude will start working and give you a preview after some time.
If something looks wrong (for example, text is covering your face or the zoom is too fast), just tell it directly:
- “Remove the box from my face”
- “Make the zoom slower”
- “Change this text animation”
It usually fixes it.
Some Real Tips From My Daily Experience
- Use the stronger model (currently Opus 5.5 level). Keep it on Medium or High. Extra/Max finishes tokens very fast.
- Don’t do heavy testing the whole day. The weekly limit gets over quickly.
- Give good quality reference reels. The better the examples, the better the output.
- The first result is rarely perfect. After 2-3 rounds of feedback, it becomes quite good.
- The same process works for longer videos too, but it takes more time and credits.
Final Thoughts
Claude has made video editing much faster, but it’s still not 100% automatic.
The best combination I’ve found is:
- Do basic cutting + color grading yourself
- Let Claude handle the creative editing (animations, text, B-rolls, style matching)
This way you save both time and credits.
I’ll put all the prompts, the skill file, and tool-related links in the description.
I also share new tricks on my WhatsApp channel and Instagram whenever I find something useful.
If you try this process, tell me in the comments how it went. How much time you saved and where you got stuck — I want to know.
That’s all for this one. See you in the next article.
Take care.
